President Donald Trump insisted Thursday afternoon he will save Social Security, a day after he suggested in an interview he was open to overhauling both it and Medicare.

The president tweeted:

"Democrats are going to destroy your Social Security. I have totally left it alone, as promised, and will save it!"

The president told CNBC on Wednesday, however,  he was open to overhauling both programs, commenting, "at some point," the entitlements would be on his plate.

"We have tremendous growth," Trump said. "We're going to have tremendous growth. The growth is going to be incredible. And, at the right time, we will take a look at that."

White House spokesman Judd Deere defended the Trump administration on the issue, telling Business Insider there have been "no benefit cuts" and Trump is "keeping his commitment to the most vulnerable Americans, especially those who depend on Medicare and Social Security."

Deere further said in his email, Trump's budgets have "proposed more savings to mandatory programs than any president in history, including lowering drug costs, eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse, and getting people off welfare and back to work."

One of Trump's promises, when he ran for the White House in 2016, was he would not cut Medicare, Social Security, or Medicaid.
