Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr on Monday issued a statement urging the state Supreme Court to reject Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ appeal of the decision removing her from prosecuting the case against President-elect Donald Trump.
“Lawfare has become far too common in American politics, and it must end. As such, I would encourage the Georgia Supreme Court to not take her appeal,” Carr wrote on social media.
Earlier this month, a Georgia appeals court ruled that the relationship between Willis and former special prosecutor Nathan Wade had the “significant appearance of impropriety” and concluded that the trial court “erred by failing to disqualify DA Willis and her office” from prosecuting the criminal case against Trump.
“The remedy crafted by the trial court to prevent an ongoing appearance of impropriety did nothing to address the appearance of impropriety that existed at times when DA Willis was exercising her broad pretrial discretion about who to prosecute and what charges to bring,” the court wrote in its decision.
Trump’s lead defense attorney in the Georgia case, Steve Sadow, released a statement on social media saying that “Carr is right,” adding that the Georgia Supreme Court “only grants discretionary review in cases of great concern, gravity, or importance to the public. ... This decision is nothing more than appropriate remedy ruling.”
