Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., the ranking minority member of the Committee on House Oversight and Government Reforms, posted on X Monday, "This will be my last term in Congress."
Connolly also said he will soon be "stepping back as ranking member of the oversight committee."
Connolly announced in November in an open letter to his constituents that he had been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus.
"I'm going to undergo chemotherapy and immunotherapy right away," he said. "Cancer can be tough."
Connolly immediately began aggressive treatment, and it appeared for a while that he would make a full recovery. But Connolly's latest post indicates his battle is not over.
"When I announced my diagnosis six months ago. I promised transparency after grueling treatments," he said. "We've learned that the cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned.
"I'll do everything possible to continue to represent you and thank you for your grace. The sun is setting on my time in public service."
He offered heartfelt thanks to all who have offered support.
"I move into this final chapter full of pride in what we've accomplished together," he said. "You all have been a joy to serve."
Connolly has been a steadfast fighter in the Democratic Party and has been at the forefront of the party's attempts to hold on to some level of control and oversight in its dealings with the Trump administration.
Most recently, he announced oversight actions involving Social Security benefits management and the Pentagon's use of a commercial app for sensitive internal communications.
