China expert Gordon Chang told Newsmax on Thursday that the plan for artificial intelligence unveiled this week by President Donald Trump is "really important" for the world and "absolutely fantastic" for the United States.

The Trump administration on Wednesday released a plan to roll back regulations on AI technology and make U.S. software and hardware the "standard" for AI.
Chang told "Newsline" after the announcement, "I'm sure that [Chinese President] Xi Jinping is looking at this and saying that this could very well be the most important thing that President Trump is doing" in his second administration.
"It's really hard to exaggerate this because people say, and I think that that's right, that whoever dominates AI will dominate the 21st century," he continued. "That's talking about military, that's talking about economy, that's talking about the narratives that will govern our era."
Chang added that "it's really important that we do this," and "President Trump is taking the restrictions off of AI companies, which is really important. He's developing energy for data centers, which is absolutely critical, and he's getting our partners around the world to come with us."
Chang pointed to the "May trip that he [Trump] took to the Gulf region," which he said "is important because those countries also want to be AI players, and they're now going to be working with us. So this is absolutely fantastic."
