Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, repeated Tuesday during a Senate trade hearing a comment he posted last Thursday: "Congress has delegated too much authority on trade to the executive branch."
While Grassley is somewhat disappointed in how President Donald Trump has been using his capability to employ tariffs, he told the hearing, “I support President Trump's agenda to lower tariffs and nontariff barriers other countries impose on American goods. I support President Trump's agenda to get a better deal from China and other countries for our farmers and manufacturers."
Despite those comments, Grassley is among seven Republican senators who have signed on to proposed legislation to require a president to notify Congress of pending tariffs and, more importantly, require eventual congressional approval.
Trump vowed to veto the bill if it wins the approval of Congress.
The Hill reported that top U.S. trade official Jamieson Greer told senators during the Tuesday hearing that the Trump administration trade policy and use of tariffs are working.
"Nearly 50 countries have approached me personally to discuss the president's new policy and explore how to achieve reciprocity," he said.
