Texas Gov. Abbott: Fight Over Border Wire Is 'Not Over'

By    |   Tuesday, 23 January 2024 10:41 AM EST

Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott, reacting to the Supreme Court's decision to temporarily let border patrol agents remove razor wire fencing that Texas officials placed along parts of state's border with Mexico, is vowing "this is not over."

Abbott made his comments in a Monday post on X after justices granted a request by President Joe Biden's administration to pause a lower court's ruling that temporarily blocked federal agents from disturbing the fencing while litigation over the issue proceeds.

He wrote: "This is not over. Texas' razor wire is an effective deterrent to the illegal crossings Biden encourages. I will continue to defend Texas' constitutional authority to secure the border and prevent the Biden Admin from destroying our property."

Texas had sued the administration in October 2023 over what it said was an intensified practice by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents of cutting, destroying, or otherwise damaging fencing that the state had strategically placed on private land with the permission of landowners, Reuters reported.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, in a post on X also said the "fight is not over."

He wrote: "The Supreme Court's temporary order allows Biden to continue his illegal effort to aid the foreign invasion of America. The destruction of Texas's border barriers will not help enforce the law or keep American citizens safe. This fight is not over, and I look forward to defending our state's sovereignty."
