House GOP's Spanish X Post Sparks Backlash

By    |   Wednesday, 14 May 2025 10:15 AM EDT

Critics on Tuesday slammed the House Republicans' social media posters after a message was posted on the party's official account on X that was written in English and Spanish.

The post on X read: "House Republicans believe in every American's potential to thrive by embracing the power of work."

It then repeated the message in Spanish: "Los Republicanos en la Cámara creemos en que cada ciudadano americano tiene el potencial de prosperar y beneficiarse de las oportunidades de trabajo," which, when translated, reads: "House Republicans believe that every American has the potential to prosper and benefit from work opportunities."

Many of those slamming the post reminded the House GOP that in March, President Donald Trump signed an executive order designating English as the official language of the United States.

More than 30 states have passed laws that designate English as their official language, according to U.S. English, a group that advocates for making English the official language in the U.S.

The new administration, within hours of Trump's inauguration in January, took down the Spanish language version of the White House's official website.

Trump also shut down the site's Spanish version during his first term, but it was restored when former President Joe Biden was inaugurated in 2021.

Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, while reposting the House Republicans' message, demanded to know if someone was joking.

"Is this a joke, @HouseGOP?" he said. "We're in America. We represent Americans. We don't pander in foreign languages. Speak English."

The House GOP account also faced backlash earlier this year, when it congratulated "presidente Donald Trump y vicepresidente J.D. Vance", or, in English, "President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance" after their inauguration.
