Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, told Politico on Thursday that the House Judiciary Committee will proceed with its investigation into Hunter Biden and any potential criminal actions by the president's son.
In addition, President-elect Donald Trump had floated the possibility that he might go after "the entire Biden crime family" if elected, meaning that President Joe Biden's sweeping pardon of Hunter Biden last month might not be enough protection.
Last month, the president extended a full pardon to Hunter Biden, which not only covered his multiple convictions related to weapons charges and tax evasion, but to any federal crime that may have been committed since 2014.
"I didn't agree with it. I think a lot of Americans didn't," Jordan said of Biden's pardon decision, but he noted, "the President can pardon anyone he wants to pardon."
If Jordan proceeds with a further investigation into Hunter Biden, he is likely to start with David Weiss, the Trump-appointed special counsel who ultimately recommended to the Justice Department that the younger Biden be convicted of federal gun charges and tax evasion.
"We think we need to look at David Weiss, the special counsel," Jordan said. "There will be some additional work we need to do, I think, there because when we deposed him, he wasn't willing to — he didn't answer any questions, really, because it was [an] ongoing investigation."
Biden's full pardon of his son negated any criminal charges that Weiss had recommended, and Jordan stopped short of saying he would probe the president's decision to pardon Hunter Biden, even though doing so is within the scope of authority for the Judiciary Committee.
The investigation into Hunter Biden and his uncle James Biden hit a setback when former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov was sentenced to six years in prison this week for fabricating bribery claims against the president and Hunter Biden.
