The House Judiciary Committee has set up a Wednesday meeting to review a massive overhaul of the nation's immigration laws and spending, according to The Hill.
The committee released a detailed draft of potential legislation Monday that calls for making up to $45 billion available for immigration detention centers.
That level of potential spending is described in a section of the draft labeled "ADULT ALIEN DETENTION CAPACITY AND FAMILY RESIDENTIAL CENTERS." The draft spells out the large expenditure for what may be involved:
"In addition to amounts otherwise available, there is appropriated to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for fiscal year 2025, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, $45,000,000,000 to remain available until September 30, 2029, for the purposes described in subsection (b)."
The following subsection specifies the general groups that may be held in the detention facilities. "USE OF FUNDS. — Amounts made available under subsection (a) shall only be used for family residential center capacity and single adult alien detention capacity."
The overhaul of the country's response to illegal immigration has been a cornerstone of the election campaign and now second term in office for President Donald Trump. House Republicans. who hold the majority, have been putting a lot of time into structuring a new plan to deal with the issue, even connecting that with voting integrity.
The draft, which will be debated by the committee, is far from final. Nothing written in the draft is guaranteed to be included in the final version that may be voted on by the full House.
