House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., said on Wednesday that House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is safe in his position thanks to support from President-elect Donald Trump despite criticism over his handling of the latest spending package.
Comer told CNN in an interview that Johnson is "who Donald Trump wants to be speaker" and because of that will secure enough votes to stave off any challenges similar to the incident when a group of House Republicans, led by former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., voted with Democrats to oust the previous House speaker, Kevin McCarthy, who Trump had endorsed during his run for the post but declined to support during his ousting.
"Every time I see President Trump at a big event like the Army-Navy game, he has Mike Johnson with him, so it leads me to believe that Mike Johnson's who Donald Trump wants to be speaker," Comer said.
"I think the only way Mike Johnson does not get reelected speaker is if Donald Trump came out and said he preferred someone else. Then, we'd have to go through the process again," he added.
