Rep. Comer: Expedite Approval of RFK Stadium Redevelopment

By    |   Thursday, 17 July 2025 03:41 PM EDT

Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., the chair of the House Oversight Committee, is calling on Washington, D.C. lawmakers to expedite approval of redevelopment plans for the RFK Stadium site before their August recess.

The NFL's Washington Commanders vowed to invest $2.7 billion in exchange for the redeveloped site. Washington, D.C., said it would invest $1.1 billion over eight years to build a new stadium, housing and green space, the Hill reported.

"The Committee understands the need for deliberation and the availability of financial analyses and expects all required votes to be completed before the Council's August recess," Comer said in a letter to D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson.

Comer said the Oversight Committee was disappointed to see the Council's vote on the stadium deal delayed.

"Particularly given the significant economic benefits at stake and the clear mandate provided by federal legislation," Comer wrote. "The removal of the stadium's authorizing language from the D.C. budget has given cause for concern since it would unnecessarily delay the ultimate use of the 174 acres of currently underutilized federal property which the Act unlocked for revitalization."

In a statement, Mendelson said the Council is moving as quickly as possible to finalize a deal, the Hill reported.

"I've had and am continuing to have meetings with representatives from the Commanders and those meetings have been very productive and pleasant and constructive and we're working well together," Mendelson said to the Hill. "The Council is trying to move towards a positive vote on the stadium."
