Jimmy Carter Votes for Kamala Harris

By    |   Wednesday, 16 October 2024 01:59 PM EDT

Former President Jimmy Carter, who recently turned 100, voted for Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday.

Carter had told his son, Chip Carter, that he had hoped to live long enough to vote for Harris. The longest living president, who celebrated his centennial on Oct. 1, has been in hospice care since February 2023. His wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, died in November.

Chip Carter's wife, Becky, dropped off Jimmy Carter's ballot at the Sumter County Courthouse in his hometown of Plains, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"He's never voted for a Republican in his life," Chip Carter told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Carter, who served as president from 1977-81, earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his years of humanitarian work.

President Joe Biden paid tribute to Carter on his 100th birthday, calling him a moral force.

"Your hopeful vision of our country, your commitment to a better world, and your unwavering belief in the power of human goodness continues to be a guiding light for all of us," Biden said. "I admire you so darn much."
