While the federal government must stand “firmly” with those affected by the California wildfires, Alabama Sen. Katie Britt says that lawmakers shouldn’t write a “blank check” for the Golden State’s recovery when assembling an aid package, either.
"I think what we need to be doing right now is standing firmly with the people of California, letting them know they have our prayers, they have our support and that we stand ready to be thoughtful about ways that we can help in making sure that they have the resources they need," Britt said in an interview Tuesday with Politico, AL.com reported Wednesday.
“That being said, obviously you're not just going to write a blank check,” she said. “We have to be judicious with our dollars, and I think that we certainly will be. But I think the people of California need to know that America stands with them, and certainly that's the message that I plan to send.”
Fellow Republican Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville and other Republicans have called for policy conditions to be attached to aid for those left devastated by the fires that have ravaged the Los Angeles area in recent days.
On Monday, Tuberville told Newsmax that he doesn’t think other states should be “bailing out California for choosing the wrong people to lead their state.”
"They got 40 million people in that state, and they [are] voting these imbeciles in office, and they continue to do it. And it’s just a very small part of them in that state that’s doing it," he said. "If you go to California, you run into a lot of Republicans, a lot of good people, and I hate it for them, but they are just overwhelmed by these inner-city woke policies with the people that vote for them."
He added that he "doesn't mind" sending "some money" to California, but "they don't deserve anything, to be honest with you, unless they show us they're going to make some changes."
Such changes include getting back to "building dams and stormwater, doing the maintenance with the brush and the trees, everything that everybody else does in the country, and they refuse to do it," Tuberville said.
