House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said Democrats' reaction to former President Donald Trump holding onto classified documents has been fueled by politics.

McCarthy's comments came Monday as Richard Sauber, special counsel to President Joe Biden, said "a small number of documents with classified markings" were discovered when Biden's personal attorneys were clearing out the offices of the Penn Biden Center, according to The Associated Press.

The president kept an office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C., after he left the vice presidency in 2017 until shortly before he launched his 2020 presidential campaign in 2019. The documents were found on Nov. 2, 2022.

The Justice Department is reviewing the documents.

Trump recently came under fire after the FBI found a trove of documents at the former president's at Mar-a-Lago estate.

"I just think it goes to prove what they tried to do to President Trump overplayed their hand on that," McCarthy said, according to CNN.

"They've been around even longer," McCarthy said of Biden's team. "President Trump had never been in office before and had just left, came out. Here's an individual who spent his last 40 years in office."

McCarthy noted: "It just shows that they were trying to be political with President Trump."

CBS News said McCarthy called the discovery of documents with classified markings from Biden's time as vice president "very concerning."

"He's had these classified [documents], and what has he said about the other president with classified documents?"

When asked if this instance is different since attorneys discovered them and "immediately" handed the material over, McCarthy replied, "Oh, really? They just now found them after all those years."
