Rep. Liz Cheney, after being elected as GOP conference chair, said Thursday her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, had some simple advice for her after taking over the seat he'd held more than 30 years ago.
"He said 'Liz, don't screw it up. Do your best,'" the Wyoming Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
Cheney's new position puts her in charge of the House GOP's communications strategy after Democrats take over the chamber in January. She ran unopposed after the current chair, Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, declined to continue in the post.
Cheney said Thursday that she thinks this a "hinge point of history" in the United States.
"We have such huge momentum with the Trump economy...we absolutely cannot let the Democrats in the House stop that momentum and turn us around," she said."We'll fight every day to get our majority back."
Meanwhile, in the House, the current continuing resolution will expire on Dec. 7, and Republicans will do all they can during their lame duck session to get funding in, said Cheney.
The lawmaker also on Thursday defended First Lady Melania Trump about her call to fire Deputy National Security Adviser Mira Ricardel, after Trump felt she'd treated her staff disrespectfully during her solo trip to Africa. Ricardel has been assigned elsewhere in the Trump administration.
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mrs. Trump," said Cheney. "I certainly wouldn't take anything she says lightly, and I just think she is a wonderful representative for us as a nation."
