Anti-ICE Riots Cost Los Angeles Nearly $20 Million

By    |   Tuesday, 17 June 2025 10:38 AM EDT

The anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protests-turned-riots last week in Los Angeles have cost the city nearly $20 million, with much of that coming from costs associated with the Los Angeles Police Department.

City Manager Matt Szabo told media outlets that the city has racked up $19.7 million in costs related to the riots, a number he said will likely climb.

The LAPD racked up nearly $17 million in extra costs, with more than $11 million of that in overtime. Further, LAPD police cruisers incurred $240,000 worth of damage. The Los Angeles Fire Department's response to the riots costs $1.2 million, Szabo said.

The riots produced more than $593,000 in damage to city buildings and it will cost $523,200 to clean the streets. Graffiti cleanup was at more than $85,000 through Friday, a number Szabo said will rise.

"It's critical, as the mayor has said and members of the council have said, the city will maintain public safety. But this level of extraordinary deployment is very expensive, and it's costing the taxpayers," Szabo told ABC7, adding that the costs are "not sustainable."

Szabo said LA will have to dip into reserves to pay for the protests, which took place June 7-14.

On federal ledgers, President Donald Trump’s deployment of the California National Guard and U.S. Marines to quell the rioting in LA will cost the federal government $134 million for a 60-day mission. Trump federalized the guard over the objections of Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass, both Democrats.

"We're here to maintain the peace on behalf of law enforcement officers in Los Angeles, which Gavin Newsom won't do," Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told House lawmakers last week.

James Comer, R-Ky., chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, announced Friday he was opening an investigation into Newsom and Bass for their handling of the riots.

"You falsely claimed that state and local law enforcement had protests under control; however, police were clearly unable to quell the violence in Los Angeles prior to the arrival of the National Guardsmen," Comer and Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., wrote to Newsom and Bass.
