Matt Gaetz: Resistance to Speaker Johnson 'Futile'

By    |   Monday, 30 December 2024 04:05 PM EST

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., said that after President-elect Donald Trump's endorsement of embattled House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., resistance "is now futile."

Republicans will vote for a House leader on Friday.

Some Republicans said they either would not vote to reelect Johnson or needed to think about how to vote after chaotic negotiations led to the passage of a continuing resolution to fund the government.

"Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!!!" Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Gaetz, who helped orchestrate former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's ouster in 2023, is concerned that a prolonged speaker fight could hold up certification of Trump's election victory.

"Trump endorsing Johnson is 'art of the deal' level practicality. We could never have held up McCarthy two years ago for concessions if a Trump certification hung in the balance. Now, it does," Gaetz said. "We were able to hold up McCarthy because Republican voters weren't all that eager to see us getting back to being Biden's b**ch (which Kevin ultimately did anyway). The resistance to @SpeakerJohnson is now futile."

Gaetz resigned from Congress in November after Trump nominated him to be attorney general.

The House Ethics Committee accused Gaetz of "regularly" paying for sex, including with a 17-year-old girl, and purchasing and using illicit drugs as a member of Congress, as lawmakers released the conclusions of a nearly four-year investigation that helped sink his nomination for attorney general.
