CEO of Hawaii Utility Involved in 2023 Maui Fire Got a Raise

By    |   Friday, 21 March 2025 04:17 PM EDT

Hawaiian Electric Industries was held partially responsible for the wildfire that ravaged Maui in 2023. Newsweek reported the utility CEO got a big raise.

Newsweek said CEO Scott Seu got a 20% raise that amounted to about $1.7 million, which bumped his total salary up to $6.5 million. This, reported Newsweek, as the utility prepares to begin paying legal settlements connected to the Maui wildfire of over $1.9 billion.

The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency reported last August that recovery assistance to island residents had grown to more than $3 billion. Mauirecovers.org reported efforts to get displaced residents resettled has taken a turn this year with a new U.S. Housing and Urban Development program.

Newsweek reported the utility board decided CEO Seu, and several other executives deserved raises for helping to successfully guide the utility through potentially climactic financial issues and remain afloat.
