A new theory about the mystery of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is the pilot incapacitated everyone on the plane except himself and then deliberately flew the Boeing 777 somewhere into the Indian Ocean.
"60 Minutes Australia" gathered a group of aviation experts and an oceanographer to conduct an in-depth investigation into what happened to the plane that went missing March 8, 2014. The result of the probe points to a case of mass murder-suicide.
The panel of experts looked over data from the flight's path and came up with an educated guess the pilot, Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, likely depressurized the cabin. He was able to keep himself conscious with an oxygen mask, and then he flew the airliner across Malaysia before entering the vast airspace over the Indian Ocean.
One indicator that led to the theory was someone appeared to tip the plane's wings to the left as it flew over Penang, Malaysia — which happened to be Shah's hometown.
"Captain Zaharie dipped his wing to see Penang, his hometown," Boeing 777 senior pilot and instructor Simon Hardy told "60 Minutes."
"If you look very carefully, you can see it's actually a turn to the left, and then start a long turn to the right. And then [he does] another left turn. So, I spent a long time thinking about what this could be, what technical reason is there for this, and, after two months, three months thinking about this, I finally got the answer: someone was looking out the window."
Very few pieces of the aircraft have been found over the years, and the fate of the aircraft and its 239 passengers and crew officially remains a mystery.
It is believed the plane went down in the southern Indian Ocean, somewhere around 2,000 miles west of Perth, Australia. American technology company Ocean Infinity is searching for the wreckage using undersea scans but has yet to find it.
