At a Republican House retreat in Florida, committee chairs outlined their plan for fiscal savings as plans for a budget begin to take shape.
The Education and Workforce Committee, for instance, is eyeing $60 billion in savings, while the Agriculture Committee is looking at cutting $50 billion. The Energy and Commerce Committee is focused on $200 billion in cuts, Politico reported. A handful of other chairs laid out their plans as well.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters Republicans want a budget resolution number that will be a floor of what they hope to achieve in savings.
Johnson said there were strategic reasons for not targeting more ambitious cuts as Republicans look to pass one big reconciliation bill that will extend the Trump tax cuts, pay for border security and also address energy policy.
Originally, House Republican committee chairs proposed spending cuts and budget savings that could add up to $3 trillion to fund tax cuts, Punchbowl News reported.
Along with spending cuts, Republicans are looking at an additional $125 billion in increased defense spending, two people told Politico.
House Republicans have estimated Trump's policy demands for tax cuts and border spending could add $10 trillion to the deficit, Politico reported.
With a slim House majority, Johnson said Republicans need to accept not everyone will get everything they want in the legislation.
