Newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson said Wednesday, shortly after he won the vote with the full support of the chamber's Republicans, that being elected speaker is the "honor of a lifetime."
"It has been an arduous few weeks, and a reminder that the House is as complicated and diverse as the people we represent," the Louisiana Republican posted on X, while noting that the "urgency of the moment" will demand "bold, decisive action to restore trust, advance our legislative priorities, and demonstrate good governance."
He added that the House Republican Conference is "united and eager to work."
"As Speaker, I will ensure the House delivers results and inspires change for the American people," Johnson further said. "We will restore trust in this body. We will advance a comprehensive conservative policy agenda, combat the harmful policies of the Biden Administration, and support our allies abroad. And we will restore sanity to a government desperately in need of it. Let's get back to work."
Johnson's election was quickly applauded by several conservative voices, including:
Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel: "Congratulations to the new Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson! In eight months, the Republican House Majority passed bills to lower energy costs, secure the border, defend parents' rights, improve public safety, and more. When Republicans come together, we deliver results, and that's what we need to showcase ahead of 2024. We delivered this Majority to bring solutions to the American people. It's time for Republicans to unite behind Speaker Johnson and get back to work."
Rep. Rick Allen, R-Ga.: "Mike Johnson is a man of faith, a bold conservative, and the leader we need to unite the Republican conference. I was proud to vote for Speaker Mike Johnson on the House floor today. This has been a challenging process, but I am ready to get back to work on the many issues facing our nation and I believe Speaker Johnson is the right leader at the right time to advance our shared, conservative priorities on behalf of the American people."
National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Richard Hudson, R-N.C.: "It's time to get back to work. Under Democratic leadership, American families are suffering; they cannot afford to have the Republican House majority on the sidelines any longer. I am proud to support Mike Johnson because he is a leader, a reconciler, and a uniter who is the right man to bring House Republicans together. He is a sharp legal mind and a constitutional scholar. I know Mike cares deeply about our Conference, understands our majority is the last line of defense against the Democrats, and will work relentlessly with the NRCC to go on offense. I am confident we will grow our majority with Republicans united behind Speaker Johnson and making our case to improve American families' lives."
Tea Party Patriots Action (TPPA) Chair Jenny Beth Martin: "Tea Party Patriots Action congratulates Mike Johnson on his election to speaker, and congratulates House Republicans for finally getting it right. Speaker Johnson faces enormous challenges in working to fight the Biden Administration and the Democrat-controlled Senate to right our nation's course, to restore fiscal discipline, and to defend our interests at home and abroad. We are confident he is ready to fight to secure our border, to get Washington's reckless spending under control, to end the weaponization of government against its citizens, and to end the woke policies guiding our military. We at TPPA look forward to continue working with Speaker Johnson on behalf of our shared values and the tens of millions of Americans who live by them."
Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga.: "Today, I proudly voted for now-Speaker Mike Johnson on the House floor. After ten months of infighting over personalities and politics, I am grateful that our majority has rallied behind a strong conservative, an effective legislator, and a trusted, well-liked man to lead our conference. Mike Johnson is simply the right man for this moment, and I look forward to working with him to put America First and get our country back on a path to fiscal and economic prosperity. Let's get to work!"
Priests for Life National Director Frank Pavone: "Great news in the election of Rep. Mike Johnson as our new Speaker of the House. It is great news for America and great news for the pro-life movement. He has been a great friend of Priests for Life and of the unborn for many years and we look forward to his leadership."
