Missouri Republican Rep. Phil Amato is sponsoring House Bill 807 which is being referenced as the, "Save MO Babies Act," has some people up in arms, and others wondering what the fuss is about.
The bill is now being reviewed by the Missouri legislature.
Sponsor Amato points to a key section of the legislation which is designed to promote, "… the safe and healthy birth of children in the state through the utilization of existing resources; coordinate community resources and provide assistance or services to expecting mothers identified to be at risk for seeking abortion services; and prevent abortions through the adoption of children by fit and proper adoptive parents."
What opponents of the bill appear to be most upset about, is the language referencing, "reduce the number of preventable abortions."
One element of that would include development of a list or registry of pregnant women who may seek abortion services.
In response to the proposal, the Missouri House Democratic Caucus posted on Facebook its opposition to the plan.
"We have to imagine even conservative Missourians would be horrified by this idea. The elected Republicans in Jefferson City need to hear from us loud and often that this is an extreme government overreach and a creepy, draconian measure aimed at scaring our fellow citizens. Members of the public are allowed to submit testimony in favor or opposed to bills like this."
Additional legislation being proposed in Missouri would block abortions if a fetal heartbeat could be detected unless a medical emergency is declared.
Abortion rights in Missouri have recently involved a statewide referendum, a subsequent court case, and a related court ruling just last week.
