Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was "fine" and recovering after suffering a fall at the U.S. Capitol, incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told reporters Tuesday.
McConnell, 82, will be stepping down as the party's leader in the chamber next year, but plans to serve out the remaining two years of his term in office as a senator despite a series of health scares last year that included two instances of freezing up in public while speaking.
"He is fine, he's in his office," said Thune, who will succeed McConnell as the party's leader when Republicans take a 53-47 Senate majority next year.
Farnoush Amiri, congressional reporter for The Associated Press, wrote in a post on X that McConnell "fell during a GOP lunch today and there is a medical team with a wheelchair that just went into his office."
Other social media reports stated McConnell, who spoke at the luncheon, was seen with cuts on his face.
McConnell suffered several health scares following a fall last year leading to two episodes where he froze during news conferences. McConnell, the longest-serving GOP leader in Senate history with a roughly 18-year tenure, has said he will finish out his term, which ends in 2026.
