Elon Musk decided to try and repair his relationship with President Donald Trump after being urged to do so in a call last Friday from Vice President JD Vance and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, people familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.
Vance, who has positioned himself as both an attack dog and a problem solver in his role as vice president, had kept his involvement in the feud low key. Although he sided with Trump in the dispute, he refrained from criticizing Musk, which allowed him to be involved in the peacekeeping effort.
In the call from Vance and Wiles, the two urged the tech billionaire to put an end to his falling out with the president, which had burst into the open early this month in dramatic fashion.
Musk de-escalated early Wednesday, when he wrote a post on X stating that "I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far."
Trump also appeared to be taking a softer approach in recent days. On Monday, he said that he was disappointed with Musk's criticism of the tax bill but that he would consider reconciling with him, telling the New York Post that "things like that happen, I don't blame him for anything."
