Former Speaker Pelosi Returns Home Following Surgery

By    |   Wednesday, 18 December 2024 10:52 PM EST

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., returned home Wednesday following successful emergency hip replacement surgery in Luxembourg, the New York Post reported.

Pelosi, 84, suffered a fall Friday while walking down a flight of stairs during a trip to Europe with a congressional delegation. Pelosi was transported by the U.S. Military from Luxembourg to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and was admitted to a hospital for evaluation, according to a defense official.

"Speaker Pelosi is grateful to U.S. military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at Landstuhl Army Base and medical staff at Hopital Kirchberg in Luxembourg for their excellent care and kindness," spokesperson Ian Krager said in a statement released Saturday.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul, R-Texas was traveling with the longtime Democratic lawmaker as part of a bipartisan delegation to Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

"I was right next to her. She likes to wear high heels, very high. She was on one of her last steps on this marble staircase that didn’t have a railing and she lost her footing and fell to the ground," McCaul told reporters after the incident. "I immediately helped pick her up. And we took a picture of that. You can see me holding her up by her hand and then very soon thereafter, a vehicle showed up and took her to the hospital."

Pelosi, who was first elected to Congress in 1987 and twice served as speaker, stepped down from her leadership post two years ago but remained in Congress and was re-elected in November to a 20th term representing California's 11th Congressional District, which includes most of San Francisco.
