Fire Under New Jersey Train Puts 9 in Hospital

By    |   Monday, 04 August 2025 04:19 PM EDT

Nine passengers were hospitalized and train lines were suspended after a fire broke out  Monday morning under a PATH train in Jersey City, New Jersey.

According to CBS News, the blaze began under an eastbound train at the Newport PATH station around 6:15 a.m.

Video posted online shows passengers yelling for the doors to be opened and evacuating as the train filled with smoke.

"Move, move, move!" one passenger could be heard shouting in the footage.

The person taking the video then stepped onto the platform, where flames engulfed the track under the end of the train.

Reports indicate that at least 13 passengers were treated for smoke inhalation and nine were hospitalized.

In an X post on the social platform X, one rider described hearing "a loud explosion" before the fire started.

"This was not just smoke," another passenger said on X. "The car before me was literally in flames."

Eric Robinson, who witnessed the emergency, told CBS he saw people holding their chests and receiving supplemental oxygen during the incident, which took place at the start of the morning rush hour.

"I'm surprised nobody got trampled — the amount of smoke they say was inside and everything," Robinson said.

Trains heading to Manhattan's 33rd Street station from Journal Square in Jersey City and to the World Trade Center from Hoboken were suspended, CBS reported.

In a post on its X account, PATH — Port Authority Trans-Hudson — announced that both suspended lines had resumed normal service just before 11 a.m.

"We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused," the rapid transit system wrote.

The fire was the most recent issue to affect those traveling between New Jersey and New York City. According to NJ.com, three New Jersey Transit buses collided with each other at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on July 2, injuring 17 people. Another crash, this time between two New Jersey Transit buses, occurred on July 24, injuring 20 people, the outlet reported.

The New York Post reported that a car also caught fire in the Lincoln Tunnel in recent days.
