Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of defense, will be meeting with the incoming president at the Army-Navy football game Saturday.
Hegseth’s nomination has come under scrutiny amid allegations of alcoholism, financial mismanagement, and sexual misconduct, claims he has denied. He has been meeting with senators to shore up support.
Hegseth, a former Army National Guard officer, will be attending the game, held at Northwest Field in suburban Maryland, with Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., who was selected to be Trump’s national security adviser, The Washington Post reported.
On Monday, Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, echoed her support for Hegseth through the nomination process. Senate Republicans believe Hegseth may have survived his initial rollout, Punchbowl News reported.
In an interview Monday, Hegseth said Democrats had been trying to destroy his nomination with anonymous sources.
"The left is trying to turn this into a trial in the media, a show trial. We're not going to let that happen," Hegseth said. "I'm going to walk in the door of every one of these senators as an open book, willing to answer their questions because they deserve answers."
