By    |   Sunday, 19 January 2025 10:58 AM EST

Six in 10 Americans say they’re optimistic about the next four years under President-elect Donald Trump, a mark higher than his first term eight years ago, according to a CBS News poll released Sunday.

The level of optimism is 4 points better than in 2017 ahead of Trump’s first term. It’s also greater than the 58% level of optimism at the start of outgoing President Joe Biden’s term, according to the poll. The high-water mark belongs to President Barack Obama (79%) at the outset of his presidency.

The age group most optimistic is 18-29 at 67% while 51% of those aged 65 and over represent the least optimistic, according to the survey.

According to the survey, 52% said they have good expectations for the economy in 2025 compared to the 38% who think the economy is good now.

Further, 39% of those surveyed, including 74% of Trump voters, say they expect grocery prices to go down during his upcoming term. Another 24% expect no change, according to the poll.

Overall, 42% said they expect Trump’s policies to make them better off financially compared to 28% who said they expect to be worse off. Trump voters are highly optimistic, with 77% saying they expect to be better off, according to the survey.

Regarding Trump’s vow to deport illegal migrants in the country, 55% said they approve of that policy. Nine in 10 Trump voters, meanwhile, said they approve, the survey said.

However, 54% said they oppose Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on imported goods compared to the 82% of Trump voters who approve, according to the poll.

CBS News/YouGov conducted the survey among 2,174 U.S. adults from Jan. 15-17. The margin of error is +/- 2.5 percentage points.
