A majority of likely U.S. voters say President Donald Trump would win a third White House term if the 22nd Amendment were repealed, according to a new Rasmussen poll.
The survey found that 53% say Trump would likely be reelected to a third term, including 32% who say it's very likely the president would return to the White House a third time.
The Constitution's 22nd Amendment was enacted after former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt won an unprecedented fourth Oval Office term. The amendment limits presidents to two terms in office.
According to the poll, 35% say it's unlikely that Trump could win a third presidential term, including 19% who say it's not at all likely.
Eleven percent of respondents were unsure.
On the subject of repealing the 22nd Amendment, 35% say they approve of repealing it, including 19% who say they strongly approve.
Nearly 6 in 10, or 59%, say they disapprove of changing the Constitution to allow Trump to exceed the two-term limit, including 48% who say they strongly disapprove.
Among voters who say they strongly approve of repealing the 22nd Amendment, 88% say Trump could likely win a third term in 2028.
A 52% majority of Republicans say they would approve of repealing the 22nd Amendment, compared to just 26% of Democrats and 29% of independents.
If the 22nd Amendment were repealed, 71% of Republicans, 39% of Democrats and 50% of independents say it is likely that Trump would win reelection a third time.
A slightly larger share of men voters, 57%, than women voters, 50%, say they believe it's likely that the Republican president could win the 2028 race.
Thirty percent of white voters, 38% of Black voters, 48% of Hispanic voters and 46% of voters of other racial and ethnic minorities say they would approve of repealing the 22nd Amendment, with Black voters the least likely to say Trump could be a three-term president.
Voters younger than 40 are more likely than older age groups to approve of repealing the 22nd Amendment and are also more likely to say that Trump could win the presidency for a third time.
Half of self-described conservative voters say they approve of repealing the 22nd Amendment, compared to 54% of moderates and 75% of liberals, who say they strongly disapprove.
Of voters who strongly approve of the job Trump is doing as president, 58% say they would be in favor of repealing the 22nd Amendment. Of Kamala Harris voters, 73% say they strongly disapprove of repealing the 22nd Amendment.
The poll was conducted Feb. 11-13 and surveyed 1,233 likely U.S. voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
