A majority of U.S. voters said Vice President Kamala Harris is more likely to raise taxes than lower them if she defeats former President Donald Trump in the presidential election, Rasmussen Reports poll results showed
Asked if Harris is "more likely to raise taxes or lower taxes" if she wins the election, 52% of likely voters said the Democrat presidential nominee is more likely to raise taxes, according to Rasmussen survey results published Wednesday.
Just 25% said Harris is more likely to lower taxes, 17% said she would keep taxes about the same, and 5% were not sure.
Asking how Harris will approach taxes causes partisan differences.
Most Republicans (76%) and unaffiliated voters (60%) said Harris is more likely to raise taxes, though only 23% of Democrats agree, according to Rasmussen Reports.
As for Harris being more likely to lower taxes, 44% of Democrats, 19% of undecided voters and only 12% of Republicans agreed with that sentiment.
Men (61%) were significantly more likely than women voters (45%) to say Harris is more likely to raise taxes if she wins the election.
A share of 60% of voters 65 and older, 53% of those 40-64 and 45% of under 40 voters said Harris is more likely to raise taxes if she wins the White House.
When asked "how important will the issue of taxes be in this year's presidential election?" 85% said taxes will be an important issue, including 51% who said it will be a very important issue.
Only 13% said taxes will not be important in the election.
Majorities of every political category — 85% of Democrats, 84% of Republicans and 88% of voters not affiliated with either major party — said taxes will be at least somewhat important in the presidential election.
In a racial breakdown, 51% of whites, 56% of Blacks, 49% of Hispanics and 48% of other minorities expect taxes to be a very important issue in the presidential election.
Among voters who said taxes will be a very important issue in the presidential election, 65% said Harris is more likely to raise taxes if elected.
Black voters were less likely to say Harris will raise taxes if she wins.
Trump last week said he would move to end taxes on overtime pay if he wins in November. The former president also proposed eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits and tips, a proposal that Harris later echoed.
The Rasmussen Reports survey was conducted Sept. 5 and 8-10 among 881 likely voters. The margin of sampling error is plus/minus 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
