The attorney for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani accused the Biden administration's Justice Department and the Democrat-led city's legal system of teaming up to commit "lawfare" against his client.
Giuliani was found in contempt of court Monday for failing to properly respond to requests for information as he turned over assets to satisfy a $148 million defamation judgment granted to two Georgia election workers.
"Today my client @RudyGiuliani was unjustly held in Contempt of Court. Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, did not get what they wanted on behalf of their clients, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Moss," lawyer Joe Cammarata posted Monday night on X.
"They wanted Mayor Giuliani not to be able to defend himself at the trial on January 16, 2025, but the Judge did not grant that relief, as it would have been the death penalty in this case. You did not see the Plaintiffs in Court probably because this case is not about them. This case is about lawfare and the weaponization of the legal system in New York City."
Judge Lewis J. Liman issued his contempt-of-court ruling after hearing Giuliani testify for a second day at a hearing called after lawyers for the election workers said the former mayor had failed to properly comply with requests for evidence over the last few months.
Cammarata said the New York state criminal case against President-elect Donald Trump and the civil litigation against Giuliani were "very similar."
"Mayor Giuliani should get a fair hearing and trial just like President Trump should have but did not," Cammarata wrote. "The cases against President Trump and Mayor Giuliani are very similar – it's the left wing Democrats trying to use liberal Judges in New York to win when they should lose on the merits.
"The Judge read an extensive decision on the record, which clearly was not decided at the close of this case, rather pre-determined and written before Mayor Giuliani's testimony concluded and oral arguments rendered."
Cammarata said the Willkie Farr & Gallagher law firm had been associated with President Joe Biden's son Hunter, and one member was associate counsel in the Obama White House.
"The outcome was as expected, no surprise, except that Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, did not get the victory that they desired," he wrote.
At the start of Monday's hearing, Giuliani appeared before an American flag backdrop, which he said he uses for a program he conducts over the internet, but the judge told him to change it to a plain background. He also at one point held up his grandfather's heirloom pocket watch and said he was ready to relinquish.
Giuliani faced a Dec. 20 deadline to turn over evidence that would help Liman decide at a trial later this month whether Giuliani can keep a Palm Beach, Florida, condominium as his residence or must turn it over because it is deemed a vacation home.
