Dem Super PAC Raises $20M to Fight Texas Redistricting Plan

By    |   Monday, 28 July 2025 06:56 PM EDT

The largest super PAC supporting Democrats has put together $20 million to counter Republican efforts in Texas to redraw congressional district maps.

The House Majority PAC's Lone Star Fund will use the funding for voter registration initiatives, advertising, and targeted investment with Hispanic voters, the Washington Examiner reported Monday.

Democratic National Committee officials said they will utilize 30,000 volunteers to make calls to "persuadable Republican Texas voters" in Republican-held districts to discuss the redistricting push, the Examiner reported.

"Republicans know that the only way they hold onto the majority is by rigging the system, but it won't work," a DNC spokesperson said in a statement to the Examiner. "Democrats will hold Republicans across the country accountable for their vote to rip away healthcare and food access and that starts with organizing from the ground up."

President Donald Trump reportedly has championed a move by GOP lawmakers to redraw the state's 38 districts to help protect the party's narrow House majority in next year's midterm elections. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott recently called the state legislature into a special session to address the flooding disaster in Kerr County, among other issues that include redistricting.

In a post earlier this month on X, the Texas Republican Party applauded Abbott by calling the special session to address "multiple legislative priorities adopted by our delegates," including redistricting. The Texas GOP wrote that redistricting is "an essential step to preserving GOP control of Congress and advancing President Trump's America First agenda."

Republicans hold 25 of the state's congressional districts. Democrats hold 12, with one vacancy following the death of Rep. Sylvester Turner in March. Turner's vacancy is one of three among Democrats in the House, with one among Republicans, who hold a 219-212 advantage in the lower chamber. Special elections to fill those vacancies are set for later this year.

Texas has not redrawn its maps between censuses since 2003, which prompted a walkout from state Senate Democrats, the Examiner reported. Republicans still won in their effort, gaining a majority in the state legislature that they have since held.

Democrats leading blue states have also threatened to redistrict mid-decade in response to Abbott and Trump's push, The Examiner reported. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he is considering options to counter Texas.
