Trump Admin Considering Moving Money to Fund ICE

By    |   Wednesday, 29 January 2025 08:54 AM EST

The Trump administration reportedly is considering using funding from several other government agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), to help fund Immigrations and Customs Enforcement's mass deportation of illegal migrants.

Money targeted for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the Coast Guard also could be redirected to ICE, NBC News reported.

All the departments fall under the Department of Homeland Security, and the executive branch is allowed to move money appropriated by Congress from one agency to another within a department, the outlet said.

The House and Senate must be notified of such transfers, and there are limits on how much money can be moved.

A Government Accountability Office report in May found that from 2014 to 2023, DHS had notified Congress it planned to move a total of $1.8 billion to help parts of ICE that needed more money, NBC News said.

The DHS under the Biden administration in fiscal year 2023 moved about $400 million to ICE from other parts of DHS.

President Donald Trump took office last week promising to focus on national security and immigration by deporting illegal migrants, especially those with criminal histories.

That plan, though, will hinge on securing money for detention centers, The Associated Press reported.

During an appearance Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., implored the House and Senate, both led by the GOP, to fund Trump's plans to secure the border and deport migrants.

NBC News reported ICE was facing a $230 million budget shortfall even before Trump took office.

Administration border czar Tom Homan on Sunday told ABC News that the success of the deportation mission will depend on Congress allocating enough money to make it happen.

In an interview with NewsNation, Homan defended the estimated $86 billion cost of mass deportations, emphasizing that safeguarding national security and American lives is priceless.
