The White House called reports that President Donald Trump wants to fire Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem “fake news.”
“Secretary Noem is doing a great job implementing the President’s agenda and Making America Safe Again,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said in a post on X.
“Anonymous former staffers pretend to know what POTUS is thinking, and the Bulwark treats them as credible?” she asked.
“This ‘report’ — and the Bulwark — is total FAKE NEWS!” she continued.
The Bulwark on Saturday said three former DHS officials “made clear that Trump is indeed considering moving on from Noem” over the employment of her unpaid adviser, former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.
“Things are f***ed,” one former official said of the pair. “It’s horrible, they’re going to destroy this place. I’m just hoping the new secretary gets here in time.”
A report in CNN last month said Trump was happy with Noem’s performance in carrying out his mass deportation agenda but that Lewandowski was a cause of concern.
Lewandowski is a temporary, unpaid “special government employee” permitted to work only 130 days in a 365-day period.
“Yes, he likes [Noem], but it has been brought to his attention that [Lewandowski] is a problem, and the agency is being mismanaged because of it,” a person close to the White House told CNN at the time.
Lewandowski told the Bulwark, “None of that is true.”
