President-elect Donald Trump and news anchor George Stephanopoulos have been ordered to sit for depositions next week in Trump’s defamation suit against ABC News, a judge ruled Friday.
The deposition, if held next week, will take place as Trump is in the middle of putting together his Cabinet administration.
“I’m going to do everything in my power to make the president available,” agreed Trump’s lawyer, Alejandro Brito. “But there are limitations of my ability to do so. I have to factor the Secret Service into the equation.”
He assured the court that he would work with Trump’s staff to figure out his availability.
Trump filed the suit against ABC and Stephanopoulos in March, claiming that Stephanopoulos damaged his reputation by stating multiple times on air that he had been found liable for sexually assaulting writer E. Jean Carroll.
The suit alleges Stephanopoulos made the claim several times "with malice or with a reckless disregard for the truth" during a March 10 interview on “This Week With George Stephanopoulos” with Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C.
