Police: Suspect's Notebook Offers Rationale for Killing CEO

By    |   Wednesday, 11 December 2024 10:38 AM EST

The accused assassin of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson reportedly was found with a notebook that detailed plans for the shooting.

Police officials said Luigi Mangione, who has been charged with the murder, was in possession of a notebook when he was arrested Monday, CNN reported.

The outlet also reported that fingerprints taken from Mangione match those collected at the scene of the assassination in New York City on Dec. 4 — the first positive forensic match investigators say directly ties the suspect to the crime scene.

The notebook described going to a "bean-counter" conference and killing an executive, The New York Times reported.

"What do you do? You wack the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention. It’s targeted, precise, and doesn’t risk innocents," was written in the notebook, the Times reported.

Mangione, 26, was arrested while at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. A gun, clothing and fake identifications found in his possession all closely match those used by the shooter, police said.

Authorities also found a three-page manifesto and a spiral notebook that included a 262-word handwritten note, which begins by appearing to take responsibility for Thompson’s murder, the Times reported.

The notebook included to-do lists of tasks that needed to be completed to facilitate a killing, CNN reported.

One notebook passage included Mangione writing about the Unabomber, whom he also wrote about in online posts.

Mangione wrote about possibly using a bomb to kill his victim but added that doing so "could kill innocents."

The accused killer has received sympathy online and offers to pay his legal bills in examples of Americans' fury toward the healthcare industry.

CNN also reported that a New York Police Department intelligence report warns online rhetoric could "signal an elevated threat facing executives in the near-term."

Mangione intends to fight his extradition to New York from Pennsylvania, where he was arrested, his defense lawyer told a judge at a hearing Tuesday.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this story.
