Top State Department Official Leaves After Breaking USAID Apart

By    |   Monday, 14 April 2025 06:23 PM EDT

The State Department official who was largely responsible for breaking up USAID has left his government position.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the story. The Hill followed with a report indicating a State Department spokesperson said that Peter Marocco "was brought to State with a big mission – to conduct an exhaustive review of every dollar spent on foreign assistance. He conducted that historic task and exposed egregious abuses of taxpayer dollars."

Marocco's work was instrumental in the Trump efforts to break up USAID and cancel spending that was heavily criticized by the administration.

The Trump administration plans to ask Congress to remove more than $8 billion in spending that had previously been approved for USAID.
