Trump: Calif.'s 'Incompetent Pols' to Blame for 'Death, Catastrophe'

By    |   Sunday, 12 January 2025 09:33 AM EST

President-elect Donald Trump continued to assail the "incompetent pols" of Los Angeles and California for the "apocalyptic" wildfires that are taking lives and destroying homes.

"The fires are still raging in L.A.; the incompetent pols have no idea how to put them out," Trump wrote on Truth Social early Sunday morning. "Thousands of magnificent houses are gone, and many more will soon be lost. There is death all over the place. This is one of the worst catastrophes in the history of our country.

"They just can't put out the fires. What's wrong with them?"

While Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom has been the object of most of Trump's ire, his post expands his criticism after the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger urged Trump to visit the burning region in a letter Friday.

"I've sent a letter to President-Elect @realDonaldTrump inviting him to engage in wildfire recovery efforts and to visit the county to see the impact firsthand," Barger wrote in a post on X with the screenshots of the letter. "The White House's engagement allows for the rapid deployment of federal resources, including emergency personnel and financial assistance."

Barger's letter urged Trump to support the first responders working tireless and bravely to save lives and property.

"By accepting this invitation, Mr. President-Elect, you will join us in supporting our citizenry and thanking our heroic first responders, who have risked their own lives to save others," she wrote.

"We would also ask you, as our president, to stand with the people of Los Angeles County as we set our course to rebuild. Your presence would be deeply felt and appreciated."

Trump once stood with local leaders and Newsom after the Woolsey Fire in Malibu during his first administration.

"We would be greatly encouraged, and our success enhanced, if you came to Los Angeles to stand with us, as you have in the past, as our president," the letter continued.

As for the governor, Newsom has beaten back Trump criticism on the mismanagement of water resources in the state and city of Los Angeles, claiming the "water restoration declaration" Trump accused him of not signing did not exist, The New York Times reported.

"The governor is focused on protecting people, not playing politics, and making sure firefighters have all the resources they need," Newsom's office statement read.
