Washington Democrat Rep. Adam Smith told Newsmax on Monday that the southern "border is being overwhelmed" and that the Biden administration is working with Congress to resolve the crisis.
"I think," Smith tells "American Agenda," that "what's happened in the last few years is that the numbers have just become overwhelming."
"Like I said, when you look at Venezuela, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru, all of these countries that have fallen into some level of violence and poverty, the border is being overwhelmed, and we need to change policies to recognize that reality. And right now, we need to change the law. We need to change the asylum laws. It's not something that can be done by executive action, and we are negotiating to do that."
Regarding border deal negotiations, last week, sources told Punchbowl News that legislation in the Senate is expected to move forward tying foreign aid to security at the southern border. A border deal, which could include concessions from Republicans allowing for a protracted asylum process, would also, according to The Hill, "unlock aid for Ukraine."
The deal comes as several House Republicans have voiced hardline opposition to continued aid for Ukraine and have called for a standalone border bill.
