Now that the Republicans have secured a second term for Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., as speaker of the House, former Rep. Anthony D'Esposito told Newsmax on Saturday that "the American people want a unified front."
With the support of President-elect Donald Trump to persuade some last minute GOP holdouts, Johnson was reelected to his leadership post by a vote of 218-215-1. The lone Republican dissenter was Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky.
D'Esposito said that while Massie will always "stick to what he believes in," the American people "do not want to see chaos."
"They do not want to see the fact that there is division between the Republican Party. And what we need to focus on right now is we were ... given a mandate.
"President Trump is going to be the president in less than 20 days. We have a majority in the Senate and a majority in the House. What we should be doing is sticking together and realizing that we need to compromise," he said during an appearance on "The Count."
D'Esposito encouraged his colleagues in the House to "work together" and support Trump as the "coach."
"And right now, Speaker Johnson is the one on the field trying to make those plays down the field. And we need to all stick together as a team.
"And the Republicans need to stick together in this 119th Congress. I'm going to be watching and really hope that they stick together, because the American people want change, and the only way to deliver it is to be a unified front," he added.
