Former New York City Police Department Commissioner Bernie Kerik told Newsmax on Tuesday that police must be careful in how they handle Luigi Mangione, who was charged with killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare.
Mangione has dual degrees from an Ivy League school and was valedictorian of his high school.
"These are very smart people," Kerik said. "You got to watch where you're going to put them, who you're going to put them with. You got to make sure that they don't hurt themselves or hurt others. He's cold-blooded. If this is the actual suspect, you have got to take that into consideration."
Mangione is facing charges of second-degree murder.
"You can't murder somebody on the streets of New York City and get away with it," Kerik said on "American Agenda." "If he is the actual murderer, I'm glad they got him off the streets."
Kerik said he expects police to continue their investigation to determine the motive for the killing. Mangione had back surgery after he dealt with chronic back pain from a pinched nerve.
"They'll be looking at his bills," Kerik said. "They'll be looking at the surgeries he had, how he was charged, the interaction he had with the various medical agencies and the doctors. They will get to the bottom of it. And if he is convicted, he should go to prison for the rest of his natural life."
