Bernie Kerik to Newsmax: D.C. Officials Don't Care About Rising Crime

By    |   Wednesday, 31 January 2024 10:51 PM EST

Washington, D.C., has seen a 35% increase in homicides year over year, a 67% increase in robberies, and an 82% increase in motor vehicle theft; and according to Bernie Kerik, city officials "really don't care."

"In D.C. you have a city council that's instituting the laws that lets the thugs back out on the street and has reduced felony charges to misdemeanors for many of the things that any normal society would have these guys locked up for a long time," the former New York City police commissioner told "Rob Schmitt Tonight."

Kerik was reacting to the violent carjacking Monday of Mike Gill, a Housing Policy Council executive and married father of three. Gill, who previously served as the Republican representative on the D.C. Board of Elections, was shot and remains in critical condition.

According to The Washington Post, 2023 had the most homicides in the nation's capital since 1997, with 297 confirmed fatalities ranging in age from infants to the elderly in their 80s.

Kerik said the blame for the city's crime ultimately begins and ends with the mayor, Muriel Bowser.

"You have a mayor that is a radical left-wing mayor that does not give them [the police] the authority and resources they need to do their jobs," he said. "So as long as that happens, you're going to continue to see increases like we've seen. And it's only going to get worse."
