Following the passage of President Donald Trump's "One Big, Beautiful Bill," many Democrats have accused the GOP of putting millions of lives at risk due to cuts in Medicaid. Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Saturday that Republicans are looking to conserve Medicaid dollars "for those who need it most."
"These programs, as they continue to expand, are unsustainable," Van Duyne said during an appearance on "America Right Now."
"When we look at what we did for Medicaid ... what we said was that you should not be on this program. We need to get you off so that we can afford to have the folks who are the most vulnerable stay on this program.
"If you are illegally in our country, you should not be on Medicare or Medicaid. And that's exactly what we've done," she said.
"If you are an able-bodied adult, we need to help you be able to get a job. You should have work requirements to stay on Medicaid."
Van Duyne, who serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, said the Medicaid reforms are "just common sense."
"And that's exactly what we put in this bill. This has been used as a giveaway for states to be able to take advantage of getting additional federal dollars," she said.
"But the fact is, is if we're going to conserve our dollars for those who need it the most, this is a great place to start. And that's exactly what we did in this bill."
