House investigators expect honest answers from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during their upcoming testimony on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, but they will likely try to "obfuscate," Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., said on Newsmax Wednesday.
"They're experts at it," Perry, a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, told "National Report." "Look, they've been playing this committee for over six months now."
Perry said that the Clintons fought against coming to testify while "trying to make sure that the Democrats would support them and not vote for a contempt resolution." Since that didn't happen, he added, "It's the only reason they agreed to this."
Hillary Clinton is scheduled to testify before the Oversight Committee on Feb. 26, and Bill Clinton is expected to appear on Feb. 27, marking the first time that lawmakers have compelled a former president to testify.
Perry said the committee is not starting from the premise that the Clintons committed wrongdoing but wants direct answers to clarify what they knew and when. He also said their status does not exempt them from congressional subpoenas.
"The Clintons think that they're special, and they are special in that one is … a former president, and one is a former secretary of state," Perry said.
"But they are not special in the eyes of the law … they're expected to comply with a duly issued subpoena by a duly constituted committee, just like every other American."
Asked what investigators want to hear from Hillary Clinton specifically, Perry framed it as questions a spouse would reasonably have if confronted with allegations and publicly circulated materials.
Perry referenced what he described as images of Bill Clinton contained in a set of documents, videos, and photos released by the Justice Department and said the committee wants to know what Hillary Clinton knew about her husband's associations and any contact involving Maxwell.
"Whether they're a president and secretary of state or not, they are a married couple," Perry said.
"The question, I think, generally speaking, is what did Hillary Clinton know about that?"
"Was she OK with that? Who are these young ladies?" he added.
"What was the relationship between them and the president?" Perry continued. "What did she say to the president about it?"
The panel will also want to know what Hillary Clinton's involvement was with Maxwell, "and the relationship then between Bill Clinton, Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein, and young women being trafficked."
Perry also said the Oversight Committee is discussing interviews with Bill and Melinda Gates as part of what he indicated is a widening inquiry into Epstein's network and relationships.
"I think we absolutely do have the intention to do that, and that's in discussion right now," Perry said.
