Rep. Owens to Newsmax: DEI Makes Colleges 'Breeding Ground for Hate'

By    |   Wednesday, 06 December 2023 10:15 AM EST

The presidents of Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, testifying before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, showed how the nation's institutions of higher learning have become a "breeding ground for hate," Rep. Burgess Owens, R-Utah, told Newsmax on Wednesday.

"We spent 200 years becoming a more perfect union," but that is being destroyed with the colleges' focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, Owens said on Newsmax's "Wake Up America." "They're now [teaching] our kids about how to hate each other."

The college presidents testifying Tuesday uniformly denounced antisemitism and condemned the Hamas attacks on Israel, but also acknowledged that there are issues on their campuses.

Owens said on Newsmax that there is a "hate that's developing" on the college campuses because of race and other factors.

"We have on these campuses segregated groups, segregated dorms," Owens said. "This is in 2023, and these presidents are OK with that because they're part of the problem."

He said that if Americans want their children to grow up to be proud of their country, they should embrace each other.

"Do not send them to these Ivy League colleges that are full of Marxist ideologies in a way to divide us everywhere they can," he said. "They're very aggressive with what they're doing."

Owens, elaborating, said that there are "MIT dormitories that are black. We have Harvard graduations that are only Black, only Hispanic, only gay."

Such things are happening in "a country where we say we're not going to be judged by the color of our skin but the by the content of our character," Owens said. "We're so far away from that because of what Marxists do."

Marxists, Owens said, "do not believe there's a God in heaven. ... They do not believe in capitalism. Everything we stand for faith, family, free market education, they stand against. We're seeing that on these campuses today."

Owens said the U.S. is seeing "cowards" and "anti-American people in positions making a lot of money with no accountability," and that must change.

"We need to bring the free market into the educational system, so those that are failing our kids do something else," Owens said. "Those who can figure out the best way to get the most productive, proud, moving forward Americans, they need to be benefiting from our taxpayer dollars.

"These folks do not deserve to be in a position [where they are] impacting our kids the way they are right now. We're going to do something about it."
