Burt Jones to Newsmax: Willis Reelection Won't Help Case Against Trump

By    |   Wednesday, 06 November 2024 01:02 PM EST

Georgia Lieutenant Gov. Burt Jones told Newsmax on Wednesday that it "was not a surprise" that Fani Willis got reelected as Fulton County District Attorney, but said that this won’t prevent her case against former President Donald Trump from being thrown out.

Jones noted on "National Report" the morning after Election Day that Willis "came after me as well and I was actually the only person to actually beat her in court, I got her removed from my case because she had a clear conflict of interest."

A Georgia judge in July 2022 ruled to prevent Willis from investigating Jones, then a Republican state senator who signed the "unofficial electorate certificate" that attempted to grant the state’s electoral votes in the 2020 presidential election to Trump, as part of her case against Trump over his alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state after Willis hosted a campaign fundraiser for his opponent in the race for lieutenant governor at the time.

Jones noted that,"when an independent DA … looked at my case, they saw that there was nothing done that I did wrong. There was no criminal intent, nor was there a crime."

Jones said that Trump and the others indicted by Willis in the Georgia election interference case "are in the same situation I was in."

He went on to say that Willis "got reelected, but her case was already falling apart before [the] election last night, and it's right now in the Court of Appeals."

"I fully anticipate the Court of Appeals ruling" to remove Willis from the case, Jones said, adding that he also "wouldn't be surprised … if it totally gets thrown out."

"It was a witch hunt that she did to try to raise her personal profile and raise money off of. And like I said, there was never a crime that was committed or intent for a crime."

The lieutenant governor added, "And it's just ridiculous that the president was put through not just that here in Fulton County, but the other rogue prosecutors around the country that tried to prosecute him, tried to jail him, and everything else."
