Christie to Newsmax: House GOP Can't 'Get Out of Their Own Way'

By    |   Wednesday, 25 October 2023 08:31 AM EDT

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a candidate for the GOP presidential nomination, spoke out Tuesday night on Newsmax about the House Republicans' impasse on picking a new speaker and about former President Donald Trump's claims about the wars in Israel and Ukraine.

"It's just a continuation of the same old show," Christie said on Newsmax's "Eric Bolling The Balance" about the speaker issue, after a third nominee, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, dropped out of the race soon after he was picked Tuesday afternoon and Republicans picked a fourth nominee, Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La.

"They can't make a decision, and it doesn't give people a lot of confidence in governing when folks can't make a decision," Christie continued. "This goes all the way back, quite frankly, to the eight who made the move to get rid of [California Rep. Kevin] McCarthy. I think they fired him without cause, and they had no plan on how to figure it out."

The Republicans who voted McCarthy out, he added, "had no plan to replace him because they're not concerned with governing. What they care about is getting more hits on their websites, so they get more donations."

And now, several serious situations are going on, including the wars in Israel and Ukraine and the crisis at the southern border, but "we can't do anything because these people can't get the hell out of their own way," Christie said. "The fact is that any Republicans should be p****d at this point that we're going three weeks without a speaker because these people can't govern."

Meanwhile, Christie spoke out against Trump's claims that Israel would not have been attacked and Ukraine would not be at war if he had remained president.

"All Donald Trump did was set up the predicate for it to happen by kissing Vladimir Putin's rear end every time he could by cuddling up to him, and by refusing Ukraine the weapons they needed to protect themselves," said Christie. "He set the predicate for that also by saying that he was going to pull out of Afghanistan. He showed our weakness, and he would have done that if he had been reelected. He set up the predicate for all of this."

Further, when Israel was attacked, Trump "calls Hezbollah very smart, and he says that Benjamin Netanyahu is a problem," said Christie. "He attacks the sitting prime minister because he had the temerity to call Joe Biden and congratulate him for winning the 2020 election."

Trump's comments come because "it's all personal with him," said Christie. "'Me, me, me, me, me as the world burns, he continues to talk about himself."

Trump also isn't offering any solutions, in the "same way" that he said he was going to build the wall across the entire border of Mexico and make Mexico pay for it, as well as other promises, Christie added.

"He only needs 110 more years as president to finish the promises he made in 2016," he said.

Trump should also be more concerned about his upcoming criminal trials than matters such as the House speaker impasse, as "He's going to have to be there and not be out on the campaign trail campaigning against Joe Biden and the Democrats," said Christie.

Christie also spoke out about reports that Biden is pushing Netanyahu to hold off against invading Gaza.

"I'm pretty sure that Benjamin Netanyahu will make that decision on his own without deferring to Joe Biden," said Christie. "He's got to protect the territorial integrity of Israel and the safety of his people. He's got to retaliate for the awful murders that were committed by Hamas on Oct. 7, and I think he'll do that as soon as he knows the best way to do it."
