Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told Newsmax on Friday that as far back as 2017, he said to the NCAA, "You cannot have men in ladies' locker rooms."
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump issued the executive order "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports," declaring that biological men are not permitted to participate in women's and girls' sports. One day later, the NCAA announced a new policy change that limits college women's sports to those "assigned female at birth only."
Host Rob Finnerty asked Patrick about some parents trying to find "workarounds" and if it will become a "big problem."
"It won't be a big problem, but it will be a problem for some people to try to make it big. And that's what happens," Patrick said during an appearance on "Finnerty."
"You have a lot of people in this country, Rob. They're really the minority of whatever the issue is. But they want to elevate themselves, for whatever reason, to make it an issue."
Patrick said he predicated this debate almost a decade ago when he was a Texas state senator.
"Back in 2017, I passed what was then called 'the bathroom bill,' that said men couldn't be in women's bathrooms.
"You would have thought I was ending the world. I mean, even some moderate Republicans came out against it."
Patrick said Trump's executive order will end the debate.
"This will end. It's sad that we even have to take up legislative time," he said. "It's common sense, and it protects women."
