House Judiciary Committee member Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., told Newsmax on Thursday that the "carpet-bombing indictment" brought by the Fulton County (Georgia) district attorney is wrong on many fronts, mainly interfering with the 2024 election.
The House panel on Thursday opened a probe into District Attorney Fani Willis and her 41-count indictment, including 13 against former President Donald Trump.
"She's really stretching," Issa said on "The Record with Greta Van Susteren." "This isn't just a machine gun. This is sort of like carpet-bombing indictment. I don't think you've ever seen so many people indicted so much, but the one that really matters is the former president. The Constitution and every part of our history envisions that the acts of a president be subject to impeachment.
"She's alleging acts through the day he left office, and those acts by definition are federal, and they are expected to be handled in another way. So even if you look at all the others she wants to indict, the one she's really after is the one she really has no legitimate right," Issa added.
But at the heart of the House Judiciary Committee probe is that Willis is "interfering with a presidential election."
"Anything that effectively ends up being political interference ... actually runs afoul of our responsibility to make sure it's free and fair," Issa told Van Susteren. "All four of these trials, is there any harm in delaying them until after the presidential election? Is there anything that would toll on it or anything else and the answer is no."
Particularly irksome to Issa is that people have taken sides in the case depending on their love or hate for Trump. In essence, people have abandoned the Constitution depending on their corner, he said.
"But there were rules, and you're supposed to go by them," Issa said.
"Look, there is some considerable possible merit to this question of the mishandling of classified documents after the president left office," Issa went on. "OK, I'm not saying that shouldn't be done. And I'm not saying that in fact looking at the president's conduct and testing the Supreme Courts whether or not you can try a president for what he did while he was president. I'm not saying they can't.
"I'm saying that it's becoming pretty clear that at least the state officials in New York and in Georgia are trying to interfere with an election, and they're doing so without any precedent of charging a president in state court."
