NYC Councilman to Newsmax: Sliwa Is Commonsense Choice for Mayor

By    |   Wednesday, 29 October 2025 03:19 PM EDT

Republican New York City Council Member David Carr told Newsmax on Wednesday that mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa makes the most sense for the city's future.

"Curtis is standing up for common-sense New Yorkers, for common-sense values, the kind of governance that we had under Rudy Giuliani and Mike Bloomberg, and that we so desperately need again," Carr said on "Newsline." "And that's why I'm in Curtis's corner right now."

He said those who have tried to push Sliwa out of the race to potentially get more votes for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo against the front-runner, self-described democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, have things mixed up.

"I think that's misplaced blame," Carr said. "The Democratic Party is to blame for Zohran Mamdani's candidacy.

"Andrew Cuomo is to blame for not winning a primary that should have been his back in June. So the blame is on the doorstep of the left, which has nurtured and supported this guy's [Mamdani's] career from the beginning."

Carr also criticized comments by Mamdani's father invoking President Abraham Lincoln in the context of Nazi atrocities.

"I think that those comments are just disgraceful. I'm a member of the party of Lincoln.

"He was the great emancipator. He couldn't be further removed from Nazis and Adolf Hitler," Carr said, adding that the remarks highlight "how much distance there is between him and the people who live in the city and care so much about its future."

Carr reiterated his support of Sliwa on Monday on social media, writing that Sliwa "is a staunch advocate for common sense on policing, education, quality-of-life issues, and so many others."

"Most importantly, Curtis will never forget the outer neighborhoods of Outer Boroughs like mine because he's one of us. Let's elect Curtis as our Mayor!" Carr wrote.

Mamdani currently leads in the polls, averaging 45.8%, compared with 30.7% for Cuomo, running as an independent, and 15.8% for Sliwa, the Republican, according to RealClearPolitics.

The race is entering its final stretch as early voting continues before the Nov. 4 election.
